Weaning Puppies Is Only Natural
November 30, 2007
Weaning puppies is a perfectly natural process. Mamma dogs have been doing it successfully for ages, so how hard can it be, right?
But humans, not being dogs, can sometimes forget the natural part, and get confused about it.
Fact is, weaning puppies is an easy, logical process.
When you’re ready to begin weaning your new puppies, keep in mind that this should be done gradually, in small steps. You can’t rush it, and you definitely don’t want to begin when the puppies are too young.
Sometimes people get impatient and try to begin weaning puppies before they’re three weeks old. That’s too early. Their bodies need to develop the ability to handle solid food, and that takes time. Wait the three weeks — it’s not really so long.
The first step in the weaning process is to take the mother away from the puppies at least an hour before it’s time for them to eat. This gives the puppies a chance to get good and hungry. They’ll be more inclined to try the new, alternative food you offer them.
Remember, when it’s time for the puppies to eat, the mother should be nowhere around.
Dog Worms — Dont Let Them Get Started
November 29, 2007
There may be no warning before dog worms strike.
It was about two AM, when beneath our bed the new puppy we’d brought home from the pound just a month earlier began screaming.
Not yipping or whining — this was the kind of agonized screams that’ll stand your hair up on end. Our cute, playful new puppy was being eaten alive from inside.
He had worms, even though he’d received all the right shots just a few weeks before.
Now he was dying, right there under our bed, and we weren’t able to save him. The worms were just too advanced.
He had been a happy little guy, playful and filled with fun. So that night — and those screams — have stayed with me a very long time.
An experience like that will change your attitude fast. It sure changed mine. Up till then I’d been a bit cavalier about health care for my pets.
However, dog worms are serious business. They need to be treated as soon as possible. And even if you’re not sure, get your dog tested anyway, just to be safe. Being safe is far better than listening helplessly to your dog die in the night.
Telepathic Communication With Animals
November 28, 2007
Animal Communication, or telepathy with animals, is as common an occurrence in some people’s lives as it is an oddity in the lives of others. Telepathy is an energetic exchange between two sentient beings for the purpose of communication. Combined with body language and sometimes vocalizations, animals use this form of communication among themselves and even across species.
Only humans in Western Civilization in the last 2500 years have rejected this form of communication. Indigenous peoples all over the planet consider messages from animal guides a natural part of life, and shamans or medicine men and women, rely on their animal helpers in their spiritual service to their communities.
Native peoples around the world consider themselves part of the “web of life”. This web includes the subtle energetic pathways that allow for intuitive and psychic energy exchanges. This includes our auric field and the subtle energetic pathways known as meridians, as well as the ley lines of the Earth, who is thought of universally as our Mother, a part of us and of whom we are all a part.
Pet Owners Are The Majority Population In The U.S.
November 27, 2007
According to recent statistics, an astounding 65% of all U.S. household have at least one pet, and in many of these homes, their pets are considered part of the family. With so many homes containing pets, it is no wonder that so many laws have been created to protect our pets. Agencies that might not have existed just a decade ago, like the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (S.P.C.A), are now the dominating force in the war against animal cruelty.
But, a lot of responsibility still lies with the pet owners when it comes to ensuring that their pets are safe and secure. Making sure a pet is safe and secure also includes taking the steps needed for their safe return if they are ever become lost. Each year more than a million pets are reported lost to shelter agencies around the nation, and a large majority of these pets are never returned because of lack of any identification, or up-to-date contact information for the owners.
Animal Communicator
November 26, 2007
I have a business card burning a hole in my Rolodex. It’s from an animal communicator. Someone who allegedly interprets mental pictures from animals. I love my dog dearly. He communicates with very expressive eyes and I don’t seem to have much trouble" getting" him. But because I’m so attached to him I’ve been toying with the idea of going that step further to find out what’s really in his mind. So why don’t I?
Well. Some givens going into the situation. What goes on in dog’s heads is important to them. They’re not likely to give you a tip on the fifth at Santa Anita. They think about food, toys, other dogs. And although I’m not quite sure how the process works I don’t think it’s like Karnak the Magician where you can ask questions.
But back to why I don’t just call the number and set up an appointment.
Maybe I’m not sure I want to know what my dog thinks of me or what goes on in his head. After all he is privy to all our secrets.

Dog Supplements
A good nutritional program of dog supplements is just as important for your best pet friend as it is for us. Our pets have feelings, emotions, aches and pains just as we do. It’s pretty tough to look your buddy straight in the eyes and not feel love and compassion that drives itself right to our hearts. Foods lacking of vitamins and minerals do little more than temporarily fill the tummy. Dog supplements are ever so important for optimum health and happiness of our doggie.
Finding help for our pet best friend whether for joint, arthritis, heart, muscle, hair, or plain ole good fiber needs isn’t difficult any longer. Whether holistic or natural things like calcium, cranberry, dhea, minerals, and the whole spectrum of essentials should be on the dietary list. It’s not really that hard to deal with once your get your hands on the information. Many times all or many of these needs are dealt with in a multiple fashion.
Amino acids, acids, antioxidants and enzymes are just a few of the ingredients that cover issues from dandruff, to cardiovascular, circulatory, skin care, and immune system strengthening for the pets we love. If our little guys aren’t bouncy, peppy and happy you know something’s missing in the diet most likely.
Materials for Snake and other Reptile Cages
November 25, 2007
What kind of materials should you use when constructing a reptile cage? This question was posed to me once by someone wishing to build their own reptile cage. They were particularly asking about pine and cedar as they had heard these were no good. But it did raise the question about what are the best materials.
All-glass, tubs, melamine cages, screen cages, there are many different types of housing systems for herps. Take your pick, depending on the adult size of the animal, how much room you have to spare, and how much money you are willing to spend!
Aquarium tanks: Good choice for keeping snakes under 6 feet, amphibians, turtles, and basically anything requiring a swimming pool or some humidity. If a screen top is used, there will be enough ventilation to keep a sand boa or leopard gecko or any desert animal in it. If higher humidity is needed, the screen top can be partially wrapped with Saran wrap, and the tank can be treated as a tropical garden; put soil in it and plant some plants to raise the humidity!

Tropical Fish Breeding for Beginners - Guppies and Swordtails
November 23, 2007
Breeding tropical fish can be a lot of fun. Try your luck at breeding livebearers such as guppies or swordtails.
Equipment Needed: Breeder Box or Breeder Net Breeding Grass 5 or 10 gallon tank for the baby fish or a tank divider that you can use for your main tank. A pair - 1 female and 1 male, 2 females to 1 male works even better
Two of the more popular tropical fish for beginners has to be Guppies and Swordtails. Guppies and Swordtails are livebearers which means that their babies come out swimming. Like most livebearers, there is not much to getting your guppies or swordtails to breed. If you have a male and a female then you will eventually have a pregnant female. The gestation period for livebearers is usually 28 days but can range from 20 to 40 days.
Place the male and female in the same tank together and they will soon mate. You are probably asking, how can I tell when the female is pregnant? When a female guppy is pregnant she will develop a dark triangular shaped gravid spot near her anal vent. This will get larger and darker as the pregnancy progresses. While you are waiting on the female to develop the babies it’s time to make sure you are prepared for the delivery. We use plastic breeder boxes and always have without any problems. A breeder box is a small box plastic box about 4 inches long by 3 inches wide and 4 inches deep.
Hamsters and their quest for world domination
November 22, 2007
"Hamsters?!" I hear you say. "Who cares about some fury little rodents." You ignorant little fool, you’re pay the price for your stupidity when the Hamsters lead by yours truly will rise up and DESTROY YOUR LAME SPECIES! We are closer to this than you think. While you sleep, we are slowly spreading our influence. At first it was small. After been first discovered in 1930 by zoologist and Professor Aharoni at the University of Jerusalem, in the Syrian Desert, we quickly made our way to all four corners of the globe. With the exception of Hawaii, which does not allow its residents to own a hamster. A law was passed, hoping prevent escaped hamsters from reproducing and messing up the ecosystem. Huh.
